Blindness is an effect added by vanilla Minecraft. When the player is inflicted with Blindness, the screen will become darker and hard to see much further in front of the player. This effect can be caused by potions and certain Infernal Mobs.

If Blindness is combined with Night Vision, it can cause the entire screen to become completely black (with the exception of damage indicators popoffs and Healthbar)
